Operational Definitions

The number of employees who earn less than half of median income as percentage of the number of employed persons. Figures are obtained by adding the number of employed persons who fall within the income groups below 1/2 median income, based on the tables in the four censuses (by-censuses). Since the data are presented by income groups, the number of employed persons who fall within the income group where the median is found has to be obtained by further mathematical manipulation as follow:

(1/2 median – the average between the upper limit of the previous lower income group and the lower limit of the income group where the 1/2 median is found) / the range of the income group where the 1/2 median is found x the number of persons who fall within the income group where the 1/2 median is found.

Footnote

All figures are collected from Census and Statistics Department since 1981. The personal median income for 1981, 1986, 1991 and 1996 are 1516, 2573, 5170 and 9500 respectively.

According to C&SD (25Sep2009), starting from the year 2001, annual figures derived from the General Household Survey (GHS) may be different from those in the earlier edition. For the previous edition, the annual figures are compiled based on the average data for the four quarters of the year concerned. Starting from this edition, these statistics are compiled based on data collected in the General Household Survey in January to December each year as well as the mid-year population estimates by District Council district compiled jointly by the Census and Statistics Department and an inter-departmental Working Group on Population Distribution Projections.
