Operational Definitions

The percentage of children living in single parent households. They are based on the data collected from Census and By-census for 1986, 1991, and 1996 and compiled by the Census and Statistics Department at the request of Social Welfare Department on the socio-economic characteristics of the single parents, the housing and household particulars of the single parent families and particulars of children living in these families. Population size is extracted from Census and By-census reports. The definition of single parent was revised as“a mother or father who was widowed, divorced or separated, with child(ren) aged under 18 living with her/him in the same household”.

All figures are collected from Census and Statistics Department since 1986.
According to C&SD (25Sep2009), starting from the year 2001, annual figures derived from the General Household Survey (GHS) may be different from those in the earlier edition. For the previous edition, the annual figures are compiled based on the average data for the four quarters of the year concerned. Starting from this edition, these statistics are compiled based on data collected in the General Household Survey in January to December each year as well as the mid-year population estimates by District Council district compiled jointly by the Census and Statistics Department and an inter-departmental Working Group on Population Distribution Projections.
